The House Beautiful
A vibrant piece of public art now lives on the exterior of The Strand Theatre: The House Beautiful, a 1,300‑square‑foot mural created by Ohio Wesleyan University graduate and acclaimed muralist Nick Stull ’07. Supported by PPG Industries Inc. and brought to life with the help of OWU students and Columbus artists, the mural celebrates both the Strand’s 1916 opening and the enduring magic of the cinematic experience.
At its center, a young child pauses mid‑bite of popcorn, illuminated by the soft glow of an implied movie screen; a moment meant to capture the awe, joy, and wonder familiar to generations of moviegoers. Surrounding him, Stull incorporates film references connected to Delaware’s history, including 42, Meet Me in St. Louis, Glory, and The Dark Knight Rises, along with beloved local landmarks such as The Brown Jug, Ohio Wesleyan University, The Arts Castle, and Delaware Hayes High School.
More than a mural, The House Beautiful reflects the Strand’s commitment to community, creativity, and the transformative power of storytelling. It stands as a tribute to the people, places, and memories that define Delaware — and an invitation for all who pass by to pause, look closer, and rediscover the wonder of cinema.
